Levaquin is part of the fluoroquinolone class of antibiotics, which works by inhibiting the reproduction and repair of bacterial DNA, effectively stopping bacterial growth. Other antibiotics in this group include Cipro, Noroxin, Floxin, Trovan, and Maxaquin. Levaquin is prescribed to treat bacterial infections affecting the skin, sinuses, kidneys, bladder, or prostate. It is also used for individuals exposed to anthrax.
Take each dose with a full glass of water, either on an empty stomach or with a meal, at evenly spaced intervals. To prevent the formation of Levaquin crystals in urine, it is advisable to increase your water intake beyond your usual amount.
Avoid prolonged exposure to UV radiation. Exercise caution when performing tasks that require high concentration and quick reactions, such as driving. Inform your doctor if you have any of the following conditions before taking Levaquin:
Levaquin should not be used by individuals with a history of hypersensitivity to Levaquin, quinolones, or any of its components.
Common side effects include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and constipation. Less frequently reported effects include difficulty sleeping, dizziness, rash, flatulence, upper stomach pain, and itching. Levaquin should be used cautiously in patients with central nervous system disorders. Allergic reactions, such as hives and anaphylaxis, may also occur.
Avoid taking antacids containing magnesium and aluminum (e.g., Tums or Rolaids), anti-ulcer medication Carafate, or vitamins and supplements high in iron or zinc with Levaquin, as these can reduce its effectiveness. Separate these medications by at least two hours. Interactions are also possible with didanosine (Videx, Videx EC). Inform your doctor if you are taking:
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose.
Seek medical attention if you experience severe or persistent symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, or blood in your urine.
Store Levaquin at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) in a dry place, away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use it after the expiration date.
