Furosemide is a loop diuretic that induces rapid and short-term diuresis. It has a natriuretic effect, reduces chloride levels in the blood, and increases the excretion of potassium, calcium, and magnesium. By entering the renal tubule in the ascending thick limb of Henle's loop, it inhibits the reabsorption of sodium and chloride. This leads to increased sodium excretion, secondary water loss, and enhanced potassium secretion in the distal renal tubule. Additionally, the excretion of calcium and magnesium is heightened. Furosemide is prescribed to manage edema in conditions such as chronic heart failure (stages II and III), cirrhosis, kidney diseases, acute heart failure (pulmonary edema), brain edema, hypertensive crisis, and arterial hypertension.
Take Furosemide exactly as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
Before using Furosemide, consult your doctor if you have kidney disease, liver disease, gout, lupus, diabetes, or a sulfa drug allergy. Avoid dehydration, as Furosemide increases urination. Do not discontinue the medication even if you feel well, as high blood pressure often has no symptoms. Avoid Furosemide if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Furosemide is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, acute kidney failure with anuria, severe liver failure, liver coma or precoma, urethral stenosis, acute glomerulonephritis, urinary tract obstruction, precoma, hyperglycemic coma, gout, arterial hypotension, heart attack, pancreatitis, and other conditions.
Contact your physician if you experience signs of allergy or any of the following symptoms:
Furosemide may cause hearing damage when used with aminoglycoside antibiotics (e.g., gentamicin) or Edecrin. Concurrent use with aspirin may lead to elevated aspirin levels and toxicity. Furosemide can reduce lithium excretion. Sucralfate (Carafate) diminishes Furosemide's effectiveness; separate their intake by at least two hours.
Furosemide is sometimes used as a single dose, eliminating the need for a dosing schedule. If you take it regularly and miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if it is nearly time for the next dose. Resume your regular schedule and do not double the dose to compensate.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience loss of appetite, ringing in the ears, severe weakness, dizziness, confusion, lightheadedness, or fainting.
Store Furosemide in a dry, dark place at room temperature, away from children.
