Kemadrin contains the active ingredient procyclidine hydrochloride, which belongs to the anticholinergic class of medications. Anticholinergic drugs inhibit the activity of a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Kemadrin is used to treat tremors, spasms, stiffness, and poor muscle control associated with Parkinson's disease.
Take Kemadrin exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Always take each dose with a full glass of water and after a meal to avoid stomach upset. Do not take two doses at once. The usual intake schedule is three or four times a day.
This medication may cause dizziness or blurred vision. Be cautious when operating machinery, driving, or performing hazardous activities, or avoid them altogether. Limit consumption of alcoholic beverages. Patients treated with Kemadrin may have an increased risk of heat stroke, as this drug can reduce sweating during vigorous exercise or in hot weather. Before taking Kemadrin, inform your doctor if you have an enlarged prostate, difficulty urinating, epilepsy or another seizure disorder, heart disease or arrhythmia, depression, any other psychiatric illness, or kidney or liver disease.
Kemadrin is contraindicated in patients with an allergic reaction to it, those with narrow-angle glaucoma, an obstruction in the bowel or a complication of bowel disease (megacolon), or myasthenia gravis.
Stop taking Kemadrin and contact your doctor immediately if you experience the following side effects: an allergic reaction (facial swelling, hives, difficulty breathing), unusual fever, fast heartbeat or arrhythmia, loss of consciousness, mental confusion, anxiety, hallucinations, hyperactivity, agitation, disorientation, unusual behavior, seizures, eye pain, or a rash.
Inform your doctor about all prescription and over-the-counter drugs you use, including supplements and vitamins, especially tricyclic antidepressants, phenothiazines, antihistamines, quinidine, amantadine, haloperidol, and digoxin.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Skip the missed dose if it is close to your next scheduled dose. Do not take an extra dose to compensate for a missed one.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of Kemadrin overdose, such as large pupils, flushed face, fever, warm and dry skin, dry mouth, fast heartbeat or arrhythmia, anxiety, mental confusion, hallucinations, agitation, hyperactivity, loss of consciousness, or seizures.
Store Kemadrin at room temperature between 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use the medication after the expiration date.
