Common Use

Keftab is a cephalosporin antibiotic that kills, fights, and stops the growth of certain bacteria in the body. It is used to treat various infections, including upper respiratory infections, ear infections, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. It is not effective against colds, flu, or other viral infections.

Dosage and Direction

Take Keftab exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration. Follow the prescription schedule carefully. Take the medication with a full glass of water. If using a dispersible tablet, dissolve it in 2 teaspoons of water, stir, and drink immediately. Rinse the glass with a little more water, swirl, and drink to ensure the full dose is consumed. Do not chew or swallow dispersible tablets. Complete the full course of treatment, even if symptoms improve before the infection is fully treated. Keftab does not treat viral infections like the common cold or flu. Inform any treating doctor that you are using Keftab, as it may affect certain medical test results.

Precautions

Avoid Keftab if you are allergic to cephalexin or similar antibiotics (e.g., Ceclor, Ceftin, Cefzil, Duricef, Fortaz, Omnicef, Spectracef, Suprax). Inform your doctor if you have allergies to penicillin, kidney or liver disease, stomach or intestinal disorders (e.g., colitis), diabetes, or malnutrition before using Keftab.

Contraindications

Keftab is contraindicated for individuals with allergies to cephalexin or similar antibiotics, penicillin, kidney or liver disease, stomach or intestinal disorders (e.g., colitis), diabetes, malnutrition, or those who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding.

Possible Side Effects

Seek emergency medical help if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Contact your doctor immediately if you notice watery or bloody diarrhea, seizures, fever, sore throat, severe blistering or peeling skin rash, pale or yellowed skin, dark urine, confusion, weakness, easy bruising or bleeding, hallucinations, or reduced urination. Less serious side effects may include mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, tiredness, joint pain, or vaginal itching or discharge.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor if you are using medications such as blood thinners (e.g., warfarin), metformin (e.g., Fortamet, Glucophage), or probenecid (Benemid). Also, disclose all prescription, over-the-counter medications, vitamins, minerals, and herbal products you are taking. Do not start a new medication without consulting your doctor.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to make up for a missed one.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, or blood in the urine.

Storage

Store Keftab tablets and capsules at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Discard any unused medication after 14 days.
