Inderal works by blocking beta-adrenergic substances like adrenaline (epinephrine), which plays a key role in the sympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system that regulates heart function. This medication is prescribed to treat conditions such as tremors, chest pain, hypertension, heart rhythm disorders, ischemic heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myocardiodystrophy, and other related conditions.
Take Inderal orally with a full glass of water, regardless of meal times. It should be taken at the same time every day. Do not chew, crush, break, or open the capsule; swallow it whole. Avoid stopping the medication suddenly, as it may lead to heart-related complications.
Do not use Inderal if you have asthma, certain heart conditions (especially second or third-degree heart block), liver or kidney failure. Avoid alcohol consumption while taking this medication. Do not stop taking Inderal even if you feel better, as hypertension often has no noticeable symptoms.
Inderal should not be used by patients with sinus bradycardia, incomplete or complete atrioventricular block, severe right or left ventricular failure, bronchial asthma, a tendency to bronchospasm, pregnancy, or disorders of peripheral arterial blood flow. It is also not recommended for patients with spastic colitis.
Alcohol and aluminum can reduce the absorption of propranolol. Inderal may increase blood levels of theophylline and lidocaine. Medications like phenytoin, phenobarbital, and rifampin can lower Inderal levels in the blood, while cimetidine and chlorpromazine may increase them.
If you miss a dose of short-acting Inderal, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is within four hours of the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. For extended-release Inderal, take the missed dose as soon as possible, unless less than eight hours remain until the next dose. Never take an extra dose to make up for a missed one.
If you experience severe symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, dizziness, weakness, or fainting, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Inderal at room temperature, away from moisture and sunlight.
