Inderal LA works by blocking beta-adrenergic substances such as adrenaline (epinephrine), a key agent in the "sympathetic" portion of the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system that regulates heart function. This medication is used to treat conditions such as tremors, chest pain, hypertension, heart rhythm disorders, ischemic heart disease, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, myocardiodystrophy, and other related conditions.
Take Inderal LA orally, regardless of meal times, with a full glass of water at the same time every day. Do not chew, crush, break, or open the capsule. Swallow it whole. Avoid stopping the medication abruptly, as it may cause heart-related complications.
Avoid using this medication if you have asthma, certain heart conditions (especially second or third-degree heart block), liver or kidney failure. Refrain from consuming alcohol. Continue taking the medication even if you feel better, as hypertension often presents no symptoms.
Inderal LA is contraindicated in cases of sinus bradycardia, incomplete or complete atrioventricular block, severe right and left ventricular failure, bronchial asthma, bronchospasm tendencies, pregnancy, and peripheral arterial blood flow disorders. It is also not recommended for patients with spastic colitis.
Alcohol and aluminum reduce the absorption of propranolol. Inderal LA increases the blood levels of theophylline and lidocaine. Phenytoin, phenobarbital, and rifampin decrease the blood levels of Inderal LA, while cimetidine and chlorpromazine increase them.
If you miss a dose of short-acting Inderal LA, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is within four hours of your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. For extended-release Inderal LA, take the missed dose as soon as possible unless it is within eight hours of the next dose. Never take an extra dose to compensate for a missed one.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe symptoms such as irregular heartbeats, dizziness, weakness, or fainting.
Store the medication at room temperature, away from moisture and sunlight.
