Common Use
Indapamide is a thiazide-like diuretic containing the active substance benzamide-sulfonamide-indole. It works similarly to thiazide diuretics by altering sodium reabsorption in the loop of Henle, increasing the excretion of sodium, chloride, potassium, and magnesium in the urine. Indapamide treats hypertension, either alone or combined with other blood pressure medications. Long-term treatment is necessary, with therapeutic effects observed within 1-2 weeks, peaking at 8-12 weeks, and lasting up to 8 weeks.
Dosage and Direction
Take Indapamide once daily in the morning before breakfast, with or without food. The usual starting dose is 1.25 mg, which may be increased up to 5 mg if needed.
Precautions
- Indapamide may cause significant salt and potassium loss, especially in elderly women. Symptoms of low potassium include muscle weakness and irregular heartbeat.
- Consume potassium-rich foods or supplements if recommended.
- Higher doses, liver cirrhosis, or corticosteroid use increase hypokalemia risk.
- Monitor blood pressure, potassium, creatinine, and electrolyte levels regularly, especially in those with heart conditions, gout, diabetes, or kidney dysfunction.
Contraindications
- Do not use if allergic to Indapamide or its components.
- Avoid in severe liver/kidney failure, low potassium, anuria, or lactose/galactose intolerance.
- Use caution with electrolyte imbalances, heart disease, gout, hyperuricemia, pregnancy, breastfeeding, or in patients under 18.
Possible Side Effects
- Dizziness, headache, or fatigue.
- Digestive issues like diarrhea, vomiting, or dry mouth.
- Muscle cramps, numbness, or irregular heartbeat.
- Nasal inflammation or nervousness.
Drug Interactions
- Risk of severe arrhythmias with digoxin or amiodarone due to low potassium/magnesium.
- Diuretics like Indapamide can increase lithium toxicity by reducing kidney excretion.
Missed Dose
Never double the dose. Skip the missed dose if it's near the next scheduled time.
Overdose
Seek immediate medical help for electrolyte imbalances, nausea, vomiting, or weakness.
Storage
Store tablets at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F).
