Common Use

Hyzaar is a combination of hydrochlorothiazide and losartan, both of which help regulate blood pressure. Hydrochlorothiazide is a first-line diuretic in the thiazide class that works by blocking salt and fluid reabsorption in the kidneys. Losartan is an angiotensin II receptor antagonist that prevents blood vessels from narrowing, leading to a reduction in blood pressure. Hyzaar is primarily used to treat hypertension and to lower the risk of acute cerebrovascular events. It may also be prescribed for other medical purposes.

Dosage and Direction

Take Hyzaar with a full glass of water. Follow your doctor's prescription exactly, and do not alter your dosage or extend the treatment period without medical advice.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have conditions such as congestive heart failure, kidney or liver disease, asthma, abnormal potassium levels, gout, lupus, diabetes, or a sulfa drug allergy. Avoid alcohol as it may interact with Hyzaar. This medication can impair your ability to concentrate, so exercise caution when driving or performing tasks requiring alertness. Pregnant women should avoid Hyzaar as it may harm fetal development. Limit grapefruit juice intake, as it can delay the conversion of losartan.

Possible Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience severe allergic reactions such as hives, difficulty breathing, or facial swelling. Also, consult a doctor if you notice muscle pain, weakness, tenderness, fever, nausea, vomiting, or dark-colored urine while using Hyzaar.

Drug Interactions

Using Hyzaar with psychotherapeutic medications like anxiolytics, sedatives, hypnotics, antidepressants, antipsychotics, opioids, alcohol, or muscle relaxants may intensify blood pressure-lowering effects and cause orthostasis. A high potassium intake or use of salt substitutes may increase the risk of hyperkalemia in patients taking losartan.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to compensate.

Overdose

Seek emergency medical help if you experience symptoms like irregular heartbeat, light-headedness, or fainting. Overdose may result in hypotension, tachycardia, or bradycardia.

Storage

Store Hyzaar tablets at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F), in a dry, dark container.
