Common Use

Hytrin, containing terazosin hydrochloride, is an alpha-1 blocker that relaxes arterial smooth muscles and reduces blood pressure. It is prescribed for treating urinary obstruction caused by an enlarged prostate, prostate adenoma, arterial hypertension, early-stage heart failure, and hyperlipidemia.

Dosage and Direction

Take Hytrin exactly as prescribed, with or without food. The recommended starting dose is 1 mg once daily before bedtime. The dosage may be gradually increased to 10-20 mg once daily, as directed by your doctor.

Precautions

• Follow your doctor's instructions carefully.
• Do not exceed the prescribed dose.
• Take Hytrin with a full glass of water.
• Due to potential dizziness or a drop in blood pressure, especially with initial doses, take it before bedtime.
• Dizziness may also occur if you restart Hytrin after a break.
• Regularly monitor blood pressure and prostate health while on this medication.
• Do not stop taking Hytrin without consulting your doctor, even if you feel well.

Contraindications

Hytrin is contraindicated for individuals with hypersensitivity to its components, hypotension, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and children.

Side Effects

Possible side effects include:

• Weakness, fatigue, drowsiness, restlessness
• Headache, dizziness, paresthesias
• Decreased libido, vision changes, tinnitus
• "First-dose phenomenon" (sudden drop in blood pressure after the first dose)
• Hypotension, tachycardia, arrhythmias
• Peripheral edema, cough, bronchitis
• Dry mouth, sore throat, nausea, vomiting
• Joint or muscle pain, reduced hematocrit and hemoglobin levels
• Leukopenia, hypoalbuminemia, hypoproteinemia
• Flu-like symptoms, allergic reactions

Drug Interaction

Inform your doctor if you are taking sildenafil (Viagra, Revatio), vardenafil (Levitra), tadalafil (Cialis), or other blood pressure medications like verapamil (Isoptin, Calan, Covera, Verelan).

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take double or extra doses.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include tachycardia, hypotension, and orthostatic collapse. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience these symptoms.

Storage

• Store at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F).
• Keep away from moisture, heat, and sunlight.
• Avoid storing in a bathroom or areas accessible to children.
