Common Use
Hydroxyurea is used to treat certain types of cancer, including melanoma, chronic myelocytic leukemia, ovarian cancer, and primary skin cancer of the head and neck. It is also used to manage sickled red blood cells. The active ingredient in this drug is hydroxyurea. While its exact mechanism of action is not fully understood, it is believed to be cell cycle-specific, targeting the S phase of cell division. It interferes with DNA synthesis but does not affect RNA or protein synthesis.
