Common Use

Glipizide is a sulfonylurea-class drug used to treat type 2 diabetes. It works by stimulating insulin secretion from pancreatic beta cells. Other drugs in this class include:

• Glimepiride (Amaryl)
• Glyburide (Micronase, Diabeta)
• Tolbutamide (Orinase)
• Tolazamide (Tolinase)

Dosage and Direction

Always consult your doctor before changing your Glipizide dose.

• Immediate release tablets: Start with 5 mg 30 minutes before meals (max 40 mg daily)
• Extended release tablets: Maximum 20 mg daily
• Take with a full glass of water before meals
• For best results, take regularly as prescribed

Precautions

• Avoid alcohol as it can lower blood sugar
• Swallow extended release tablets whole - do not chew, crush, or break

Contraindications

• Blood sugar lowering: Aspirin, NSAIDs, sulfa drugs, MAO inhibitors
• Blood sugar raising: Beta-blockers, diuretics, steroids, thyroid meds

Missed Dose

• Take as soon as remembered unless close to next dose
• Never double dose
• Resume regular schedule next day

Overdose

Symptoms of low blood sugar may occur:

• Cold sweats, weakness
• Drowsiness, unconsciousness
• Seek immediate medical help

Storage
