Geodon is prescribed to treat schizophrenia and the manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder. It has a high affinity for dopamine D2-receptors and a stronger affinity for serotonin 5-HT2A-receptors. The medication is believed to block serotonin and dopamine receptors while inhibiting the reuptake of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, which contributes to its antipsychotic effects. Geodon is also used to manage psychotic disorders and affective disorders. Due to its potential for serious side effects, it is only administered when other treatments have proven ineffective.
The recommended dosage for adults is 40 mg twice daily, adjusted based on individual conditions. Geodon is available in 20 mg, 40 mg, and 80 mg doses, with a maximum daily dose of 160 mg. It should be taken orally with a meal. Patients with hepatic impairments may require dosage adjustments.
Caution is advised when administering Geodon to patients with severe hepatic failure, bradycardia, or electrolyte disorders. The medication may cause drowsiness, so care should be taken when driving or operating machinery.
Geodon is contraindicated in pregnant and breastfeeding women, except in cases where the potential benefit outweighs the risk to the unborn baby. It should not be used by individuals hypersensitive to the medication. Patients with QT interval prolongation, congenital long QT syndrome, recent acute myocardial infarction, decompensated heart failure, or arrhythmia treated with class IA and III antiarrhythmic drugs should avoid using Geodon. The effects of the medication have not been studied in patients under 18 years of age.
Side effects are unpredictable and may be temporary. Common adverse reactions include:
Geodon should not be taken with the following medications due to an increased risk of serious heart rhythm disturbances:
Carbamazepine (Tegretol) may reduce the effects of Geodon, while the following medications may increase its effects:
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one.
Symptoms of overdose may include anxiety, drowsiness, tremors, slurred speech, and transient high blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Geodon at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F), away from sunlight, moisture, children, and pets.
