Common Use
Gemfibrozil is a fibric acid derivative, similar to fenofibrate (Tricor). It works by reducing triglycerides and increasing high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, lowering the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke, and heart attack. The exact mechanism of action is unknown. Gemfibrozil is particularly effective in treating high cholesterol and triglyceride levels in patients with pancreatitis.
Dosage and Direction
The recommended dose is 600 mg taken twice daily, 30 minutes before breakfast and dinner.
