Finasteride is a substance that selectively inhibits the effects of 5-alpha-reductase, an enzyme responsible for the activity of certain androgens (male hormones). Hair follicles and sebaceous glands are particularly sensitive to androgens, which stimulate cellular growth and sebum production. Hair growth is largely dependent on androgens, with testosterone being the most potent. Testosterone must be converted into dihydrotestosterone (DHT) by 5-alpha-reductase to influence hair growth. Men with low levels of 5-alpha-reductase and DHT are less likely to experience prostate enlargement or male-pattern baldness. Finpecia is used to treat androgenetic alopecia (male-pattern baldness), prostate cancer, and benign prostatic hyperplasia.
This medication should be used only as directed by a hair loss specialist or urologist. Take one tablet daily, with or without food, to treat male-pattern baldness. Consistent intake at the same time each day is recommended for best results.
Finpecia is not effective for other forms of hair loss, such as alopecia areata, stress-related hair loss, or hair loss due to vitamin and nutrient deficiencies. It must be taken daily for at least three months to observe noticeable effects, such as slowed or halted hair loss. After six months of treatment, newly grown hair may become visible. If no improvement is seen within twelve months, discontinuing the medication is advisable. Do not stop taking Finpecia without consulting your doctor, as this may result in the loss of newly grown hair within twelve months. Pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant should avoid handling broken or crushed Finpecia tablets, as the active ingredient can penetrate the skin and potentially cause fetal abnormalities (feminization of the male fetus). The tablets are coated to prevent direct contact with the active ingredient.
Finpecia is contraindicated in women, especially pregnant women, due to potential risks to the male fetus. It is also not recommended for males under 18 years old or individuals with hypersensitivity to any of its components.
Some men may experience the following side effects:
No clinically significant drug interactions have been reported with Finpecia.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume the regular schedule. Do not take an extra dose to compensate for the missed one, as it may increase the risk of side effects.
Symptoms of Finpecia overdose are not well-documented.
Store Finpecia at room temperature in a tightly sealed, light-resistant container.
