Femara is an oral anti-estrogen medication that reduces estrogen levels in postmenopausal women to help prevent certain types of breast cancer.
The recommended dose of Femara for adults and elderly patients is 2.5 mg once daily. Take it with a full glass of water, with or without food. Always follow your doctor's instructions. Regular tests may be required to monitor the medication's effectiveness and your bone mineral density. Do not miss any medical appointments.
Inform your doctor if you have liver disease, as you may need dosage adjustments or special safety tests. Do not start Femara if you are pregnant. Use effective birth control methods while taking this medication. Never take more than the prescribed dose.
Femara should not be used by pregnant women, as it may cause harm to the fetus.
Possible side effects include allergic reactions such as hives, rash, difficulty breathing, facial swelling, as well as hot flashes, headache, night sweats, muscle or joint pain, fatigue, weakness, weight gain, nausea, and swelling in the extremities. Stop taking Femara and consult your doctor if these symptoms worsen.
Combining Femara with tamoxifen (20 mg daily) may reduce letrozole blood concentrations. Exercise caution when using Femara with drugs metabolized by cytochrome P450 isoenzymes (2A6 and 2C19). Inform your doctor about all medications, herbal products, supplements, and vitamins you are taking.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not take an extra or double dose.
Femara is unlikely to cause life-threatening symptoms in case of overdose. However, inform your doctor immediately if you suspect you have taken too much.
Store Femara at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F). Keep it away from moisture, heat, and sunlight. Avoid storing it in bathrooms or places accessible to children.
