Common Use

Famvir is an antiviral medication that transforms into penciclovir in the human body. Penciclovir is effective against viruses such as Herpes simplex (types I and II), Varicella zoster, and the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). It penetrates virus-infected cells, where it is converted into penciclovir-triphosphate, inhibiting viral DNA replication. Famvir does not affect non-infected cells. It is also effective against certain strains of Herpes simplex with altered DNA polymerase that are resistant to Acyclovir (Zovirax). Famvir is used to treat infections caused by Herpes simplex (types I and II), including primary infection, chronic infection flare-ups, prevention, shingles or chickenpox (Varicella zoster), postherpetic neuralgia, and recurrent genital herpes.

Dosage and Directions

Take Famvir with or without food, and always with a glass of water. The recommended dosage varies based on the condition:

• Recurrent genital herpes: 1,000 mg twice daily for one day.
• Recurrent cold sores: 1,500 mg as a single dose.
• Suppression of recurrent genital herpes: 250 mg twice daily for one year.
• Shingles: 500 mg every eight hours for one week.
• HIV-infected patients with cold sores or genital herpes: 500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days.

Do not exceed the recommended dosage and follow your doctor's instructions.

Precautions

• Avoid contact between affected areas and other people.
• Do not touch your eyes after touching affected areas.
• Wash your hands frequently to prevent spreading the infection.

Contraindications

Famvir should not be used by patients hypersensitive to its components, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or children. Dose adjustments and caution are required for patients with kidney failure.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, and allergic reactions. Some adults may experience mental confusion or hallucinations. Patients with weakened immunity may have stomach pain or fever.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double or extra dose. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.

Overdose

Symptoms of a Famvir overdose are unknown. However, acute kidney failure may occur if dosage recommendations for patients with kidney failure are not followed. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Famvir at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light and moisture. Keep it out of reach of children and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
