Common Use

Famciclovir is an anti-viral medication. After transformation in the human body, it becomes penciclovir, which is effective against the following viruses:

• Herpes simplex (types I and II)
• Varicella zoster
• Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)

Penciclovir enters virus-infected cells, where viral enzymes convert it into penciclovir-triphosphate, blocking viral DNA replication. It does not affect healthy cells. Famciclovir is effective against some acyclovir-resistant herpes strains.

Famciclovir is used to treat:

• Herpes simplex (primary infections, chronic flare-ups, prevention)
• Shingles or chickenpox (Varicella zoster)
• Postherpetic neuralgia
• Recurrent genital herpes

Dosage and Directions

Take Famciclovir with or without food, each dose with water. Recommended doses:

• Recurrent genital herpes: 1,000 mg twice daily for 1 day
• Cold sores: 1,500 mg as a single dose
• Suppressing genital herpes: 250 mg twice daily for 1 year
• Shingles: 500 mg every 8 hours for 7 days
• HIV patients (cold sores/genital herpes): 500 mg twice daily for 5-10 days

Never exceed the recommended dose. Follow your doctor's instructions.

Precautions

• Avoid contact between infected areas and other people
• Do not touch eyes after touching affected areas
• Wash hands frequently to prevent spreading infection

Contraindications

Do not use Famciclovir if you are:

• Allergic to its ingredients
• Pregnant or breastfeeding
• A child

Dose adjustments are needed for patients with kidney problems.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include:

• Headache
• Nausea or vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Dizziness
• Allergic reactions

Some adults may experience confusion or hallucinations. Immunocompromised patients may develop stomach pain or fever.

Drug Interactions

No significant drug interactions are currently known.

Missed Dose

Take a missed dose as soon as you remember, unless it's almost time for the next dose. Never double the dose. Resume your regular schedule the next day.

Overdose

Symptoms are unknown, but kidney failure may occur if kidney patients don't follow dosage guidelines. Seek immediate medical help if overdose is suspected.

Storage

• Store at 59-77°F (15-25°C)
• Keep away from light, moisture, children, and pets
• Do not use after expiration date
