Common Use

Ezetimibe is an antihyperlipidemic agent used to treat high blood cholesterol, along with a low-fat, low-cholesterol diet. It is also prescribed for high blood sitosterol and campesterol when combined with diet therapy. Note that Ezetimibe does not prevent heart disease or heart attacks, as confirmed by clinical studies.

Dosage and Direction

Take Ezetimibe orally, with or without food or milk. The standard recommended dose is 10 mg once daily. Patients needing a larger LDL-C reduction (over 55%) may start with 10-40 mg once daily.

Precautions

HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors are also contraindicated in pregnant or nursing women. Risks include myopathy and rhabdomyolysis.

Discontinue use and consult a doctor immediately if severe reactions occur. Report any unusual symptoms.

Ezetimibe may interact with:

• Cholestyramine (Prevalite, Questran)
• Colestipol (Colestid)
• Colesevelam (Welchol)
• Gemfibrozil (Lopid)
• Cyclosporine (Neoral, Sandimmune, Gengraf)
• Blood thinners like warfarin (Coumadin)

Drug interactions don't always require discontinuation but may alter effectiveness. Consult your doctor for management strategies.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it's near the next scheduled dose. Never double the dose. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.

Overdose

Symptoms of Ezetimibe overdose are not well-documented but may be harmful. Seek immediate medical attention if suspected.

Storage

Store at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
