Common Use
Etoricoxib is used to treat:
- Acute and chronic osteoarthritis
- Ankylosing spondylitis
- Acute gouty arthritis
- Chronic musculoskeletal pain
It contains etoricoxib, a selective COX-2 inhibitor that blocks prostaglandin production, reducing inflammation, pain, and fever. Unlike some NSAIDs, etoricoxib does not affect platelet function or the gastrointestinal mucosa.
Dosage and Directions
- Take orally with water, with or without food.
- Osteoarthritis: 60 mg once daily.
- Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis: 90 mg once daily.
- Acute gouty arthritis: 120 mg once daily (max 8 days).
- Chronic pain: Typically 60 mg once daily.
Follow your doctor's instructions precisely. Do not exceed recommended doses.
Precautions
Consult your doctor if you have:
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or plans for pregnancy
- Allergies to etoricoxib or NSAIDs
- Heart disease (heart failure, heart attack, stroke, bypass surgery)
- High blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, or smoking (increased cardiovascular risk)
- Lactose intolerance (tablet coating contains lactose)
Use caution in patients over 65.
Contraindications
Do not use etoricoxib if you have:
- Hypersensitivity to its components
- Pregnancy, breastfeeding, or infancy
- Aspirin/NSAID intolerance or asthma
- Stomach ulcers, gastrointestinal bleeding, or inflammatory bowel disease
- Severe heart, liver, or kidney failure
- Clotting disorders (e.g., hemophilia)
- Recent coronary bypass surgery (CABG)
- Uncontrolled high blood pressure
Possible Side Effects
- Swelling (legs/ankles)
- Nausea, vomiting, heartburn, stomach pain
- Diarrhea or indigestion
- High blood pressure
- Dizziness or headache
Drug Interactions
Inform your doctor if taking:
- Warfarin (increased bleeding risk)
- ACE inhibitors (blood pressure effects)
- Aspirin (higher ulcer risk)
- Rifampicin (reduces etoricoxib's effectiveness)
Missed Dose
Skip the missed dose if it's almost time for the next one. Never double-dose.
Overdose
Seek medical help immediately, even with no symptoms.
Storage
Keep at 15-30°C (59-86°F) in a dry place, away from sunlight and moisture (e.g., bathrooms).
