Common Use

Esidrix is a thiazide diuretic (water pill) that helps prevent your body from absorbing too much salt, which can lead to fluid retention. This fluid retention often occurs in individuals with congestive heart failure, cirrhosis of the liver, kidney disorders, or edema caused by estrogen or steroid use. Additionally, Esidrix is prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension).

Dosage and Directions

Take Esidrix exactly as directed by your doctor. Do not exceed the prescribed dosage or duration of use. Your doctor may adjust your dose periodically to ensure optimal results.

Regular blood pressure monitoring is necessary to ensure the medication is not causing harmful effects. Attend all scheduled appointments.

If you are vomiting or dehydrated, your blood and urine may be tested. Continue using Esidrix for high blood pressure even if you feel well, as hypertension often has no symptoms. Inform any treating doctor that you are using a thiazide diuretic, as it can interfere with thyroid test results.

Precautions

Consult your doctor before taking Esidrix if you have kidney or liver disease, gout, allergies, asthma, diabetes, or a sulfa drug allergy.

Contraindications

Do not use Esidrix if you are allergic to hydrochlorothiazide or unable to urinate. Inform your doctor if you have liver or kidney disease, asthma, allergies, gout, diabetes, or a sulfa drug allergy. Avoid alcohol and prevent overheating or dehydration during exercise in hot weather.

Possible Side Effects

Seek urgent medical help if you experience severe side effects such as:

• Allergic reaction: hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat.
• Dry mouth, thirst, nausea, vomiting.
• Weakness, drowsiness, restlessness, light-headedness.
• Fast or uneven heartbeat.
• Muscle pain or weakness.
• Numbness or tingling.
• Red, blistering, peeling skin rash.
• Nausea, stomach pain, low fever, loss of appetite, dark urine, clay-colored stools, jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).

Less serious side effects may include mild stomach pain, diarrhea, constipation, or blurred vision.

Drug Interaction

Inform your doctor if you are using:

• Lithium.
• Steroids (e.g., prednisone).
• Digoxin (Lanoxin).
• Cholestyramine (Questran, Prevalite) or colestipol (Colestid).
• Other blood pressure medications.
• Insulin or oral diabetes medicine.
• NSAIDs such as aspirin, ibuprofen, diclofenac, indomethacin, naproxen, piroxicam, nabumetone, etodolac, and others.

Missed Dose

Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take the medicine at the next scheduled time. Do not take extra medicine to make up for the missed dose.

Overdose

Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose. Symptoms may include nausea, weakness, dizziness, dry mouth, thirst, and muscle pain or weakness.

Storage

Store Esidrix at room temperature, away from heat, light, and moisture.
