Epivir is an antiviral medication used to combat infections caused by the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which is the primary cause of AIDS. It works by preventing the cells from producing new viruses and reducing the viral load in the body. Additionally, Epivir is prescribed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B infection. It is important to note that this medication must be used in combination with other HIV drugs for optimal effectiveness.
Take Epivir orally with or without food or milk, at the same time each day. For adults, the standard dose for hepatitis B treatment is one 100mg tablet once daily. For HIV treatment, the recommended dosage is one 300mg tablet once daily or one 150mg tablet every 12 hours.
For children, the dosage is determined by the child's weight and their ability to swallow pills. The liquid formulation should be administered at 4 mg per kilogram of body weight, up to a maximum of 150 milligrams twice daily.
Note: This information is provided for review purposes only. Always consult your doctor before using Epivir to ensure the best results.
Do not take Epivir without a doctor's approval if you have a history of kidney disease, liver disease, pancreatitis, muscle problems, or blood count issues. This medication does not reduce the risk of transmitting HIV or hepatitis B to others. Avoid alcohol consumption as it may increase the risk of pancreas or liver damage. Epivir should not be used during pregnancy, while planning to become pregnant, or while breastfeeding without medical advice.
Epivir is contraindicated in individuals who are hypersensitive to the active substance or any of the excipients in the medication.
If you experience any of these side effects, stop using Epivir and consult your doctor immediately. Seek medical advice for any unusual symptoms.
Epivir may interact with medications such as interferon-alfa (Roferon, Intron, Rebetron), trimethoprim (Bactrim, Proloprim, Septra, Trimpex), or ribavirin (Rebetol, Ribasphere, Copegus, Virazole). Not all drug interactions require discontinuing one of the medications. Always consult your doctor to manage these interactions effectively.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take double or extra doses. Resume your regular dosing schedule the next day.
Symptoms of Epivir overdose are not well-documented. If you experience any unusual symptoms, contact your doctor immediately.
Store Epivir at room temperature, between 59-77 degrees F (15-25 degrees C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not use the medication after the expiration date.
