Elocon is a synthetic glucocorticoid (steroid hormone) available in cream, ointment, and lotion forms. It is used topically to relieve itching, inflammation, eczema, dermatitis, allergies, and other skin rashes. The exact anti-inflammatory mechanism of Elocon is not fully understood but is believed to involve the production of proteins called lipocortins, which inhibit phospholipase A2. These proteins regulate the biosynthesis of inflammatory mediators like prostaglandins and leukotrienes by preventing the release of their precursor, arachidonic acid. Elocon is effective in treating inflammatory and itchy dermatoses, hyperkeratosis-related conditions (e.g., atopic dermatitis, seborrheic dermatitis, psoriasis, chronic eczema) in adults and children over two years old.
Apply a thin layer of Elocon to the affected skin once daily. Avoid using it on large skin areas to prevent excessive absorption and potential side effects. Do not cover the treated area with airtight dressings unless directed by your doctor.
Avoid getting Elocon in your eyes. Prolonged use or application over large areas may lead to reversible suppression of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system. If skin irritation occurs, stop using Elocon and consult your doctor for appropriate treatment.
Elocon should not be used if you are hypersensitive to any of its components.
Rare side effects of Elocon may include burning, itching, skin atrophy, and acne rosacea. Glucocorticosteroids (GCS) may also cause skin dryness, irritation, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, acne-like rash, hypopigmentation, perioral dermatitis, allergic contact dermatitis (ACD), secondary infections, striae, and miliaria (sweat rash). The risk of these side effects increases with the use of airtight dressings.
Elocon is not chemically compatible with alkalis. It should not be used alongside anthralin topicals (used for psoriasis) as it may worsen psoriasis symptoms.
If you miss a dose, apply Elocon as soon as you remember. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Long-term use of Elocon may lead to Cushing's syndrome, characterized by symptoms such as acne, depression, excessive hair growth, high blood pressure, humped upper back, insomnia, moon-faced appearance, muscle weakness, obesity in the trunk, paranoia, stretch marks, and increased susceptibility to bruises and fractures. If you suspect an overdose or experience severe side effects, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Elocon at a temperature between 2-25°C (36-77°F). Shake the lotion well before each use.
