Eldepryl is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) prescribed to manage symptoms of Parkinson's disease, a brain disorder affecting movement. Parkinson's disease reduces dopamine-producing nerve cells in the brain, leading to movement-related difficulties. Eldepryl helps maintain dopamine levels for longer periods, aiding in smoother movement. It does not have standalone anti-Parkinson effects and must always be used alongside levodopa/carbidopa.
Take Eldepryl orally daily after breakfast and lunch. Avoid eating or drinking for at least 5 minutes after taking the orally disintegrating tablet. The recommended adult dose is 10 mg per day, split into two 5 mg doses.
Note: This information is for reference only. Always consult your doctor before starting any medication to ensure optimal results.
Avoid foods high in tyramine, such as:
Tyramine can dangerously increase blood pressure when combined with Eldepryl. Use with caution if you have peptic or duodenal ulcers, labile hypertension, cardiac arrhythmias, severe angina pectoris, severe liver or kidney dysfunction, or psychosis. Higher doses (over 30 mg daily) may reduce MAO-A inhibition, increasing side effects. Be cautious of lightheadedness or dizziness when standing up. Eldepryl is not recommended during pregnancy, lactation, or breastfeeding without medical advice.
Do not use Eldepryl if you are hypersensitive to selegiline or any of its components. Avoid using Demedrol or similar narcotics while on Eldepryl. Also, avoid Eldepryl if you have taken meperidine, propoxyphene, tramadol, methadone, cough or cold medicines with dextromethorphan, or other MAO inhibitors like isocarboxazid, tranylcypromine, phenelzine, rasagiline, or transdermal selegiline within the past 14 days.
Stop using Eldepryl and consult your doctor immediately if you experience any of these side effects or any unusual symptoms.
Eldepryl may interact with:
Drug interactions do not always require stopping a medication but may alter its effects. Discuss with your doctor how to manage these interactions.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not take it if it's almost time for your next dose. Avoid doubling doses. Continue with your regular schedule the next day.
Symptoms of overdose include severe headache, vision problems, sweating, hallucinations, lightheadedness, cool or clammy skin, fast or irregular heartbeat, fainting, or seizures. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur.
Store Eldepryl at room temperature between 20-25°C (68-77°F).
