Doxycycline is a synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic derived from tetracycline. It is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, acne, gonorrhea, chlamydiosis, periodontitis (gum disease), blemishes, bumps, and acne-like lesions caused by rosacea.
Take this medication after a meal with a full glass of water to reduce esophageal irritation. The daily dose can be taken as a single dose or divided into two doses, with 12 hours between each. Do not exceed the prescribed amount or continue use beyond the recommended period. Some brands of this medication should not be taken with dairy products. Swallow delayed-release capsules whole; do not crush, break, or open them. If using an oral suspension, shake well before use and measure with a special spoon. Avoid taking this medication if it has expired, as it may harm your kidneys.
Using Doxycycline during tooth development may cause permanent discoloration. For infections caused by Staphylococcus, Escherichia, or Shigella, confirm sensitivity to the medication before use. Avoid prolonged UV exposure during treatment and for 4-5 days afterward. For long-term treatment, regular monitoring of peripheral blood cell count, liver function, and serum nitrogen and urea levels is recommended.
Side effects of Doxycycline may include:
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe side effects.
Avoid taking Doxycycline with aluminum, magnesium, or calcium-based antacids, as they may slow its absorption. Minerals like calcium or iron and bismuth subsalicylate have similar effects. Doxycycline may enhance the activity of warfarin. Drugs like phenytoin (Dilantin), carbamazepine (Tegretol), and barbiturates (e.g., phenobarbital) can increase the metabolism of Doxycycline.
Do not take a double dose. If it's almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
If you experience severe or persistent nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea, seek medical attention immediately.
Store Doxycycline at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) in a dry place, away from light, children, and pets. Do not use after the expiration date.
