Common Use

Doxepin is a tricyclic antidepressant used primarily to treat depression, anxiety, and certain forms of insomnia. It works by increasing levels of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, helping to improve mood and relieve tension. In lower doses, it is also effective for treating sleep disorders and chronic itching (pruritus). It is prescribed based on the condition, with the dose tailored to the individual.

Dosage and Direction

• For depression and anxiety: typical starting dose ranges from 25 mg to 75 mg per day
• For insomnia: lower doses (3-6 mg) taken 30 minutes before bedtime
• Capsules or tablets should be swallowed whole with water

• Do not stop the medication abruptly

Precautions

• Inform your doctor if you have a history of glaucoma, urinary retention, heart disease, or bipolar disorder
