Divalproex contains Divalproex sodium, a substance that interacts with certain brain chemicals and increases the concentration of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurotransmitter. This medication is used to treat:

- The manic phase of bipolar disorder
- Prevention of migraine headaches
Dosage and Direction
The recommended dosages for Divalproex are:
- Acute mania (bipolar disorder): 750 mg daily, taken in divided doses.
- Migraine prevention: 250 mg twice daily.
- Seizure treatment: Initial dose of 10-15 mg/kg/day, increased gradually by 5-10 mg/kg/day weekly as needed.
Do not exceed the recommended dose. Follow your healthcare provider's instructions. Drink plenty of water during treatment. Liver function should be monitored regularly. Swallow pills whole, do not crush or chew. Seek medical advice if seizures persist. Do not stop taking Divalproex without consulting your doctor.
Precautions
Possible risks include:
- Liver failure: More common in children under 2, especially with metabolic disorders or brain diseases (e.g., multiple sclerosis, Huntington's disease). Symptoms include weakness, vomiting, and swelling.
