Common Use

Detrol La contains tolterodine tartrate, a substance belonging to the class of cholinergic (acetylcholine) receptor blockers. This medication is used to reduce bladder muscle spasms and manage symptoms of overactive bladder, including urge urinary incontinence and frequent urination.

Dosage and Direction

Detrol La is typically taken twice daily. The recommended starting dose is 2mg taken twice a day. For long-acting Detrol La, begin with a 4mg daily dose. If not well tolerated, reduce the dose to 2mg. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function may require dose adjustments. Do not open, crush, or chew Detrol La capsules; swallow them whole.

Precautions

Discuss the following conditions with your doctor before using Detrol La: glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, or a personal or family history of Long QT syndrome. This medication may affect your ability to think clearly or concentrate, so exercise caution when driving or operating machinery.

Contraindications

Detrol La should not be used by patients with uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, gastric retention, or a history of allergic reactions to any of its components.

Possible Side Effects

In addition to allergic reactions such as hives, facial swelling, rashes, or difficulty breathing, Detrol La may cause side effects like chest pain, irregular heart rate, confusion, painful urination, hallucinations, or reduced urination.

Drug Interactions

Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially those that may interfere with the liver's elimination of tolterodine. These include:

• Chloroquine (Arelan) or halofantrine (Halfan)
• Levomethadyl (Orlaam) or methadone (Dolophine, Methadose)
• Vinblastine (Velban)
• Psychiatric medications such as chlorpromazine (Thorazine), mesoridazine (Serentil), pimozide (Orap), haloperidol (Haldol), or thioridazine (Mellaril)
• Heart rhythm medications such as disopyramide (Norpace), procainamide (Procan, Pronestyl), amiodarone (Cordarone, Pacerone), dofetilide (Tikosyn), sotalol (Betapace), quinidine (Cardioquin, Quinaglute)

Missed Dose

Do not take a double dose of Detrol La if you miss one. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include blurred vision, dry mouth, and a rapid heartbeat.

Storage

Store Detrol La at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F), away from moisture and heat.
