Detrol contains tolterodine tartrate, a substance from the class of cholinergic (acetylcholine) receptor blockers. This medication is used to reduce bladder muscle spasms, overactive bladder symptoms, urge urinary incontinence, and frequency.
Detrol is typically taken twice a day. The recommended starting dose is 2mg taken twice daily. For long-acting Detrol, begin with a 4mg daily dose. If not well tolerated, reduce the dose to 2mg. Patients with impaired liver or kidney function may require dose adjustments. Do not open, crush, or chew Detrol capsules. Swallow the tablet whole.
Consult your doctor if you have any of the following conditions: glaucoma, kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, or a personal or family history of "Long QT syndrome." Detrol may affect your ability to think, react, or concentrate. Exercise caution while driving or operating machinery.
Detrol is not suitable for patients with uncontrolled narrow-angle glaucoma, urinary retention, gastric retention, or a history of allergic reactions to the drug's components.
In addition to allergic reactions such as hives, facial swelling, rash, skin eruptions, or difficulty breathing, Detrol may cause chest pain, fast or uneven heart rate, confusion, painful or difficult urination, hallucinations, or reduced urination.
Inform your doctor about all prescribed and over-the-counter medications you are taking. Specific drugs that may interfere with the liver's elimination of tolterodine include:
Do not take a double dose. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Symptoms of overdose may include blurred vision, dry mouth, and a fast heartbeat.
Store Detrol at room temperature between 15-30°C (59-86°F), away from moisture and heat.
