Decadron is prescribed to treat a variety of conditions, including arthritis, blood, hormone, and immune system disorders, allergic reactions, certain skin and eye conditions, breathing issues, and specific bowel disorders. It is also used in the treatment of cancers such as leukemias and lymphomas. Additionally, Decadron serves as replacement therapy for patients whose adrenal glands cannot produce adequate levels of corticosteroids.
Take Decadron by mouth as directed by your doctor. The initial oral dose typically ranges from 0.75 to 9 mg daily, depending on the condition being treated. Adjustments to the dose may be made based on your response to therapy. To prevent stomach upset, take this medication with food or milk. If instructed to take it once daily, do so in the morning before 9 AM. Use this medication regularly at the same time(s) each day to maximize its benefits. Continue taking it even if you feel well, and follow the dosing schedule carefully. Do not stop taking Decadron without consulting your doctor. Inform your doctor if your condition does not improve or worsens.
Avoid immunizations, vaccinations, or skin tests unless specifically directed by your doctor. Before taking Decadron, inform your doctor or pharmacist if you have allergies or a medical history of conditions such as active fungal infections, kidney or liver disease, mental or mood disorders, low blood minerals, thyroid disease, stomach or intestinal problems, high blood pressure, heart issues, diabetes, eye diseases, brittle bones, or a history of blood clots. Long-term use of this medication may reduce your body's ability to produce natural hormones during physical stress, requiring dose adjustments. If you have stopped taking Decadron within the past 12 months, you may need to resume it during physical stress. Inform your doctor or dentist before surgery if you are using this medication or have taken it recently. Limit alcohol consumption if you have a history of ulcers or take high doses of aspirin or arthritis medications to reduce the risk of stomach or intestinal bleeding. Diabetic patients should monitor blood sugar levels regularly, as Decadron may affect glucose control.
During pregnancy, use Decadron only if clearly needed, and discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor. This medication may pass into breast milk and could harm a nursing infant. Breast-feeding is not recommended while using Decadron.
Avoid contact with individuals who have recently received oral polio vaccine, nasal flu vaccine, chickenpox, or measles unless you have had these diseases before. If exposed and you have not had these infections, seek immediate medical attention.
Do not use Decadron if you are allergic to any of its ingredients, have a systemic fungal infection, or are taking mifepristone. Contact your doctor immediately if any of these apply to you.
Side effects of Decadron depend on the dose, duration, and frequency of use. Short-term use is generally well-tolerated with mild side effects, while long-term, high-dose use may lead to serious side effects. Whenever possible, the lowest effective dose should be used for the shortest duration to minimize risks. Side effects may include fluid retention, weight gain, high blood pressure, loss of potassium, headache, muscle weakness, facial puffiness, hair growth, thinning skin, easy bruising, glaucoma, cataracts, peptic ulcers, worsening diabetes, irregular menstruation, growth retardation in children, convulsions, stomach upset, dizziness, mood swings, insomnia, increased appetite, depression, euphoria, personality changes, or psychotic behavior. Notify your doctor promptly if these effects persist or worsen.
Certain drugs, such as phenobarbital, ephedrine, phenytoin, and rifampin, may increase the breakdown of corticosteroids in the liver, potentially reducing their effectiveness. If you start treatment with any of these medications, your doctor may need to adjust your Decadron dosage.
If you miss a dose of Decadron, take it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
Seek emergency medical attention if you suspect an overdose of Decadron.
Store Decadron at a temperature of 68-77°F (20-25°C). Avoid freezing the medication.
