Dapsone is an anti-infective medication used to treat several conditions. It is commonly combined with rifampicin and clofazimine to manage dermatitis herpetiformis (a skin condition) and leprosy (Hansen's disease), which is caused by Mycobacterium leprae. Additionally, it is used to treat pneumonia caused by Pneumocystis jiroveci. When combined with pyrimethamine, Dapsone is also effective in treating malaria.
Take Dapsone with a full glass of water. To minimize stomach upset, it can be taken with food. Consistent daily timing is recommended for maximum effectiveness. Dosage varies based on the condition:
Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and avoid exceeding the recommended dosage.
Dapsone may cause rare but serious liver or blood issues, indicated by symptoms such as bruising, pinpoint red spots, sore throat, fever, pale skin, jaundice, or rash. Seek immediate medical attention if these occur. Serious skin reactions, though rare, can also occur. Inform your doctor if you have methemoglobin reductase deficiency, G6PD deficiency, or liver disease. Avoid direct sunlight as Dapsone may increase skin sensitivity.
Do not use Dapsone if you have a known hypersensitivity to the medication.
Contact your doctor immediately if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, rash, facial swelling, or difficulty breathing. Other serious symptoms to report include:
Rifampin can reduce blood levels of Dapsone. Folic acid antagonists, such as pyrimethamine, may increase the risk of hematologic reactions.
If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dosage.
Seek emergency medical help if you experience symptoms such as excitation, seizures, nausea, vomiting, or bluish skin color.
Store Dapsone tablets at room temperature (15-30°C or 59-86°F) in a dry, tight container away from moisture and sunlight.
