Cytoxan is a cytotoxic medication used in cancer treatment. Its active ingredient, cyclophosphamide, is metabolized in the liver by cytochrome P450 into acrolein and phosphoramide. These compounds inhibit the growth and proliferation of cancer cells. While primarily targeting rapidly dividing cancer cells, Cytoxan can also affect healthy cells, leading to serious side effects. Additionally, it acts as an immunosuppressive agent. Cytoxan is prescribed for conditions such as malignant lymphoma, multiple myeloma, leukemias, neuroblastoma, ovarian adenocarcinoma, retinoblastoma, and breast carcinoma.
Cytoxan is administered intravenously to adults and children at 40-50 mg/kg over 3-5 days in divided doses. The oral dosage is 1-5 mg/kg daily. Dosage adjustments should be based on regular blood tests to monitor white blood cell counts. The medication can be taken with or without food.
Care should be taken when prescribing Cytoxan to patients with myelosuppression, liver or kidney disorders, or prior radiation or chemotherapy. Regular monitoring of blood and urine tests (for red blood cells) is necessary during treatment. Women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception while taking Cytoxan.
Hypersensitivity to cyclophosphamide and severe myelosuppression are contraindications for using Cytoxan.
Common side effects include increased vulnerability to infections and the risk of developing secondary cancers, particularly in the bladder, lymph nodes, or bone marrow. Secondary cancers may occur years after treatment.
Inform your doctor if you are taking other anticancer drugs like doxorubicin, allopurinol, or phenobarbital with Cytoxan. Adjustments may be needed for steroid hormones in patients with removed adrenal glands.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. Do not double the dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. Resume your regular dosage the following day.
Overdose symptoms are unlikely, but if you suspect an overdose, contact your doctor immediately.
Store Cytoxan at room temperature (20-25°C or 68-77°F). Keep it away from heat, moisture, sunlight, and out of reach of children. Avoid storing it in the bathroom.
