Cytotec is a medication with anti-acidic properties used to prevent the formation of stomach ulcers in patients who take NSAIDs such as aspirin or ibuprofen. Its primary component is Misoprostol, a synthetic prostaglandin naturally produced in the stomach. Prostaglandins protect the stomach's inner lining from the damaging effects of NSAIDs, which can deplete natural prostaglandins. Cytotec becomes active within 30 minutes of intake and its effects last for approximately 3 hours.
The recommended dosage for adults is 0.2 mg taken 3-4 times daily with meals. The final dose should be taken before bedtime. If tolerance is an issue, the dose can be reduced to 0.1 mg per intake.
Cytotec may cause diarrhea, so it should be used cautiously in patients with inflammatory bowel disease or other conditions that could lead to severe fluid loss. Taking the medication with food can help reduce this risk. Avoid using Cytotec with magnesium-containing antacids.
Cytotec is not recommended for individuals under 18 years of age, pregnant or breastfeeding women (as it can cause uterine contractions leading to abortion, birth defects, or premature birth), or patients with kidney impairment.
Common side effects include vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. In rare cases, patients may experience rash, drowsiness, hypertension or hypotension, headache, menstrual cramps, nausea, or flatulence.
No significant drug interactions with Cytotec have been reported.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. However, do not take it if it is almost time for the next dose. Avoid doubling the dose. Take doses at consistent times daily to minimize the chance of missing one.
Overdose symptoms of Cytotec are not well-defined but may include drowsiness, tremors, diarrhea, stomach pain, difficulty breathing, irregular heartbeat, low blood pressure, seizures, or fever. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Cytotec at room temperature, away from moisture, sunlight, children, and pets. Keep it in a tightly sealed container.
