This medication suppresses the effects of vitamin K, which plays a key role in blood clotting. By doing so, it helps prevent the formation of blood clots. Blood clots can develop in various parts of the body, such as the extremities after prolonged immobility, the lungs causing pulmonary embolism, or around artificial heart valves, leading to symptoms like shortness of breath and chest pain. Coumadin is commonly prescribed to treat blood clots in the lower extremities, pulmonary embolism, atrial fibrillation, and for certain orthopedic surgeries like knee or hip replacements, as well as following myocardial infarction.
Never take a double dose of Coumadin. It can be taken with or without food. Patients with liver or kidney dysfunction should use lower doses of the medication.
Avoid cranberries or cranberry-based products, alcohol consumption, and activities that may lead to bruising. If you require a lumbar puncture or any surgery, inform your doctor about your Coumadin use.
Coumadin interacts with many medications, which can be dangerous. Commonly interacting drugs include aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), alcohol, ibuprofen (Motrin), cimetidine (Tagamet), oxandrolone (Oxandrin), certain vitamins, and antibiotics. Always consult your doctor when taking these alongside Coumadin.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose and resume your regular schedule. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.
Symptoms of an overdose may include excessive bleeding from cuts or wounds, blood in urine or stools, and heavy menstrual periods. Seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose.
Store Coumadin at room temperature in a dark, dry place.
