Compazine is an antipsychotic medication used to treat psychotic disorders such as schizophrenia. It is also effective in controlling severe nausea and vomiting and managing anxiety. Compazine works by altering the actions of certain chemicals in the brain. It is commonly prescribed as both a tranquilizer and an antipsychotic drug.

Dosage and Direction

Take Compazine orally with a full glass of water, with or without food or milk. The recommended dosage for adults varies depending on the condition being treated:

  • Control Severe Nausea and Vomiting: 5-milligram or 10-milligram tablet 3 or 4 times daily.
  • Non-psychotic Anxiety: 5 milligrams, taken 3 or 4 times daily.
  • Mild Schizophrenia: 5 or 10 milligrams, taken 3 or 4 times daily.
  • Moderate to Severe Schizophrenia: Start with 10 milligrams, taken 3 or 4 times daily.
  • More Severe Schizophrenia: Dosages may range from 100 to 150 milligrams per day.

For children, the dosage depends on their age, weight, and condition:

  • Children under 2 years or less than 20 pounds: Do not use Compazine.
  • Severe Nausea and Vomiting: Usually not needed for more than 1 day.
  • Children 20 to 29 Pounds: 2-0.5 mg 1 or 2 times daily. Do not exceed 7.5 mg daily.
  • Children 30 to 39 Pounds: 2-0.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg daily.
  • Children 40 to 85 Pounds: 2-0.5 mg 3 times daily, or 5 mg 2 times daily. Do not exceed 15 mg.
  • Psychotic Disorders: For children 2 to 5 years old, 2-0.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg on the first day and 20 mg thereafter. For children 6 to 12 years old, 2-0.5 mg 2 or 3 times daily. Do not exceed 10 mg on the first day and 25 mg thereafter.

Older Adults: Consult your doctor before use to determine the appropriate dose.

Precautions

Use Compazine cautiously in individuals with hepatic or renal disease, glaucoma, prostatic hypertrophy, severe asthma, prolonged use, cardiovascular disease, or epilepsy. Do not use in children under 5 years of age. Avoid Compazine during pregnancy, if planning to become pregnant, or while breastfeeding without medical advice.

Contraindications

Compazine should not be used by individuals hypersensitive to its components. It is contraindicated in cases of severe toxic CNS depression, coma, subcortical brain damage, bone marrow depression, severe liver or cardiac disease, narrow-angle glaucoma, and pediatric surgery.

Possible Side Effects

  • Uncontrollable movements of the eyes, tongue, lips, face, arms, or legs
  • Tremors, drooling, trouble swallowing, balance issues
  • Restlessness, agitation, or jitteriness

Missed Dose
