Common Use

Colospa is a musculotropic antispasmodic medication primarily used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. It is also effective in managing gastrointestinal spasms caused by underlying organic disorders. The drug works by relaxing gut muscles at the cellular level. It achieves this by blocking the transfer of Na+ through fast channels in myocytes and inhibiting calcium-depot replenishment. This dual mechanism helps relax the bowels without affecting the muscles of the bronchi or uterus. Colospa does not significantly inhibit normal peristalsis. It is prescribed for gastrointestinal spasms (including those due to organic diseases), intestinal colic, biliary colic, and irritable bowel syndrome (addressing pain, cramps, intestinal discomfort, and disorders) in adults.

Dosage and Directions

The recommended daily dose of Colospa is 135 mg (1 tablet) taken three times a day, preferably before meals. Once the desired effect is achieved, the dosage may be gradually reduced.

Precautions

• Colospa may be used during pregnancy only if the expected benefits outweigh potential risks to the unborn baby.
• Avoid driving or operating machinery if you experience dizziness while taking this medication.
• Exercise caution in patients with paralytic ileus, a condition characterized by intestinal obstruction due to functional failure.
• Colospa is not recommended for children under 10 years of age.
