Colospa is a musculotropic antispasmodic medication primarily used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. It is also effective in managing gastrointestinal spasms caused by underlying organic disorders. The drug works by relaxing gut muscles at the cellular level. It achieves this by blocking the transfer of Na+ through fast channels in myocytes and inhibiting calcium-depot replenishment. This dual mechanism helps relax the bowels without affecting the muscles of the bronchi or uterus. Colospa does not significantly inhibit normal peristalsis. It is prescribed for gastrointestinal spasms (including those due to organic diseases), intestinal colic, biliary colic, and irritable bowel syndrome (addressing pain, cramps, intestinal discomfort, and disorders) in adults.
The recommended daily dose of Colospa is 135 mg (1 tablet) taken three times a day, preferably before meals. Once the desired effect is achieved, the dosage may be gradually reduced.
Like any medication, Colospa may affect individuals differently. Possible side effects include allergic reactions such as hives, rash, or facial swelling. For more information about potential risks, consult your doctor or pharmacist.
Colospa is not known to interact with other medications.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Symptoms of overdose are unclear but may include over-excitation of the central nervous system. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately.
Store Colospa at room temperature between 59-77°F (15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
