Cipro is a broad-spectrum antibiotic from the fluoroquinolones group. It works by inhibiting DNA-gyrase, an enzyme essential for bacterial DNA replication and protein synthesis, leading to bacterial cell death. This gives Cipro its bactericidal properties. It is effective against both active and resting bacteria. Cipro is prescribed to treat bacterial infections affecting the lungs, kidneys, urogenital system, gastrointestinal tract (including mouth, teeth, jaws, bladder, and biliary tract), skin, mucous membranes, and soft tissues. It is effective against various gram-negative and gram-positive bacteria, such as Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, Chlamydia, Streptococcus, and some species of Staphylococcus.
Take Cipro exactly as prescribed by your doctor, with a full glass of water, with or without food, at evenly spaced intervals. Increase your water intake during treatment. Avoid consuming milk products, as they can reduce the effectiveness of Cipro. Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release tablets; swallow them whole. If taking the oral liquid, swallow it without chewing.
Before using Cipro, inform your doctor if you have kidney or liver disease, myasthenia gravis, joint problems, diabetes, a history of seizures, low potassium levels, or heart rhythm disorders. Limit exposure to UV radiation during treatment.
Cipro is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, individuals with epilepsy, infants, teenagers under 18 years old, or those with hypersensitivity to Cipro or other fluoroquinolones.
Side effects may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, rash, headache, restlessness, confusion, hallucinations, pale or yellowed skin, dark urine, or easy bruising/bleeding. Stop taking Cipro and consult your doctor if you experience these symptoms.
Cipro should not be taken with antacids or alkaline mineral waters, or medications containing aluminum, zinc, iron, or magnesium ions, as they can reduce its absorption.
If you miss a dose, skip it and continue with the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.
Overdose symptoms may include seizures, difficulty urinating, weakness, or a combination of blue lips and pale skin. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.
Store Cipro at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets. Do not freeze the liquid form; refrigerate it if necessary.
