Common Use

Cefpodoxime is a semi-synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotic of the cephalosporin group with bactericidal effects. It is active against many gram-positive, aerobic, and anaerobic microorganisms. Cefpodoxime is resistant to beta-lactamase.

• Susceptible bacteria include those causing tonsillitis, pharyngitis, acute sinusitis, acute bronchitis, and pneumonia.
• Effective for exacerbation of chronic pneumonia, especially in alcohol abusers, smokers, and adults over 65.
• Sometimes used with other antibiotics or as injections to prevent infections before, during, and after surgery.

• Streptococcus of D group
• Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus
• Corynebacterium of J and K group
• Pseudomonas aeruginosa
• Listeria monocytogenes
• Acinetobacter baumanii
• Clostridium difficile
• Bacteroides

Dosage and Directions

• Take with food and a large glass of water.
• For liquid suspension: shake well before use (can be taken with or without food).
• Do not exceed recommended dosage or duration.
• Continue treatment even if symptoms improve to ensure complete infection clearance.

Precautions

• Consult your doctor if pregnant or breastfeeding (though not known to be harmful to unborn babies).
• Inform your doctor about kidney disease, colitis, or other intestinal conditions.
• May cause false-positive results in urine glucose tests.

Contraindications

• Hypersensitivity to cephalosporins.
• Use with caution in patients with a history of penicillin allergy.

Possible Side Effects

Most common side effects (besides allergic reactions like hives, rash, or swelling):

• Diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain
• Cough, wheezing
• Unusual bleeding or bruising
• Seizure, jaundice, confusion
• Rare cases: itching, temporary liver enzyme increases

Drug Interactions

• Reduced effectiveness when taken with H2-blockers (e.g., Ranitidine) or antacids (e.g., aluminum hydroxide, sodium bicarbonate).

Missed Dose

• Take as soon as remembered unless close to next dose time.
• Never double dose to compensate.

Overdose

• Symptoms: nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea.
• Seek immediate medical attention for severe reactions.

Storage

• Store at 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light and moisture.
• Keep liquid suspension refrigerated (do not freeze) for up to 14 days.
• Store out of reach of children and pets.
