The medication provides antiarrhythmic and antianginal effects. The antiarrhythmic effect is achieved by reducing the transportation of K+ ions through the cell membranes of myocytes and decreasing the automaticity of the sinus node. Cardarone blocks a- and b-adrenoreceptors. It is used to relieve paroxysmal tachycardia attacks, other heart-related episodes, and to treat ventricular fibrillation. Cardarone is intended for use only in life-threatening situations and must be used strictly as recommended by your doctor.
Cardarone may irritate the stomach, so it is advisable to take it with meals and in divided daily doses to minimize potential damage.
Avoid consuming grapefruit juice, excessive tanning, and UV exposure. Use caution when performing tasks that require high concentration, such as driving.
Hypersensitivity to iodine or Cardarone. Conditions such as sick sinus syndrome, disorders of atrioventricular or intraventricular conduction, thyroid gland disorders, hypokalemia, pregnancy, breastfeeding, age below 18, and simultaneous treatment with MAO inhibitors.
Contact your doctor if you experience any of these symptoms or signs of an allergic reaction.
Cardarone may interact with beta-blockers or certain calcium channel blockers, potentially causing excessively slow heart rate or electrical impulse blockage. Concurrent use with digoxin increases its blood levels; the digoxin dose should be reduced by 50% when taken with Cardarone. Cardarone also increases levels of flecainide, procainamide, and quinidine.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for the next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not take an extra dose to compensate for the missed one.
If you suspect an overdose and experience extreme dizziness, light-headedness, or fainting, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Cardarone at room temperature, below 30°C (86°F).
