Common Use

Candesartan is an antihypertension medication and a specific angiotensin II antagonist that contains candesartan cilexetil. The medication is used to treat the following conditions:

• Hypertension
• Heart failure
• Impaired left ventricle systolic function

Dosage and Direction

The recommended dosages are as follows:

• Congestive heart failure: Start with 4mg daily, may increase to a maximum of 8mg daily for mild to moderate cases.
• Hypertension: Begin with 8mg once daily, may increase to 16mg once daily if needed.

Take with or without food. Always follow your doctor's instructions, as dosage adjustments may be necessary.

Precautions

Before taking Candesartan, inform your doctor if you have any of the following:

• Heart failure
• Kidney problems (renal impairment or renal artery stenosis)
• Aortic or mitral valve stenosis
• Obstructive hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
• Hypertension with low intravascular volume
• Hyperaldosteronism
• Upcoming surgery

Contraindications

Candesartan should not be used by patients with a known hypersensitivity to its components.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects may include:

• Anemia
• Bloody stools
• Mental confusion
• Cerebral infarction
• Fatigue
• Nausea
• Kidney failure
• Dizziness
• Loss of consciousness
• Atrial fibrillation
• Chest pain

Risk of kidney problems and high potassium levels (hyperkalemia) may increase if taken with ACE inhibitors.

Drug Interactions

Candesartan has no significant interactions with:

• Glyburide
• Warfarin
• Nifedipine
• Digoxin
• Hydrochlorothiazide
• Oral contraceptives

However, be cautious with:

• Lithium: May increase lithium levels.
• Potassium supplements or diuretics: May raise potassium levels.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, skip it and take the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.

Overdose

Symptoms include low blood pressure and dizziness. Seek emergency medical help if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store at temperatures below 30°C. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
