Calan is prescribed for treating various cardiovascular conditions, including hypertension, hypertensive crisis, primary pulmonary hypertension, stenocardia, supraventricular tachycardia, sinus tachycardia, atrial tachyarrhythmia, atrial flutter, and atrial arrhythmia.
Patients with stenocardia or supraventricular tachycardia should take Calan three times daily, while those with arterial hypertension should take it twice daily. The dosage varies based on the specific condition, age, and severity of the disease. Always consult your doctor before starting the medication.
Calan may affect thinking or reaction times, so caution is advised when driving or performing tasks requiring focus and quick responses. Avoid standing up too quickly from a sitting or lying position to prevent dizziness. Limit alcohol consumption and consult your doctor if you drink grapefruit juice, as it may interact with Calan and cause potentially harmful effects.
Calan is contraindicated in cases of hypersensitivity, severe arterial hypotension, pregnancy, breastfeeding, atrioventricular block (first and second degree), sinoatrial blockade, sick sinus syndrome (except in patients with a pacemaker), Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome (WPW), and Lown-Ganong-Levine syndrome when combined with atrial fibrillation/flutter. Certain other conditions may also require careful use. Only take Calan as prescribed by your physician.
Common side effects of Calan include constipation, dizziness, nausea, low blood pressure, and headaches. Seek immediate medical attention if you experience serious symptoms such as chest pain, irregular heart rhythm (arrhythmia), slow heart rate (bradycardia), heart attack, stroke, significant water retention, difficulty breathing, very low blood pressure (dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting), hallucinations, or signs of an allergic reaction (rash, hives, itching, swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing/swallowing).
Combining Calan with a beta blocker may result in dangerous heart slowing. This medication can increase blood levels of digoxin, theophylline, carbamazepine, and myorelaxants, necessitating monitoring to avoid toxicity. In some cases, it may reduce blood levels of lithium.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double the dose to compensate for a missed one.
If you suspect an overdose of Calan and experience symptoms like a slow heartbeat or fainting, seek immediate medical assistance.
Store Calan at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F), in a light-resistant container.
