Common Use

Brand Levitra was developed by the pharmaceutical company Bayer/GlaxoSmithKline and uses Vardenafil HCl as its main component. Levitra is an oral medication designed to treat erectile dysfunction. When sexual stimulation occurs, nitric oxide is produced and released from the nerve endings in the cavernous bodies of the penis, activating the enzyme guanylate cyclase. This enzyme is responsible for the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which causes the blood vessels in the penis to widen and relax, increasing blood flow. Levitra works by inhibiting the phosphodiesterase-5 enzyme, preventing it from breaking down cGMP, thereby supporting sustained blood flow to the penis.

Dosage and Direction

The recommended dose of Levitra is 10 mg, taken approximately one hour before sexual activity. If no side effects are experienced, the dosage can be increased to 20 mg. In cases of adverse effects, the dose should be reduced to 5 mg daily. Do not take more than one tablet of Levitra in a single day.

Precautions

Levitra has not been studied in individuals with cardiovascular disease, so it should be avoided in patients who have experienced a stroke, heart failure, or a heart attack, especially within the last six months. Before taking Levitra, inform your doctor if you have:

• Kidney or liver problems
• A bleeding disorder or stomach ulcer
• An inherited retinal disorder such as retinitis pigmentosa
• An allergic reaction to this medication or other medicines
• Deformation of the penis, such as angulation or cavernous fibrosis (Peyronie's disease)
• Conditions that may lead to priapism, such as sickle-cell anemia, multiple myeloma, or leukemia

Contraindications

Levitra is contraindicated in:

• Patients with hypersensitivity to its ingredients
• Individuals treated with organic nitrates
• Patients under 16 years of age
• Those taking HIV protease inhibitors such as indinavir and ritonavir

Possible Side Effects

Levitra is generally well-tolerated, and any side effects are usually transient. The most common side effects include:

• Headache
• Flushing (facial redness)
• Dizziness
• Diarrhea
• Nausea
• Nasal congestion

Rare and uncommon side effects may include:

• Photosensitivity of the skin
• Hypertension or hypotension
• Back pain
• Watery eyes
• Myalgia
• Priapism

Drug Interaction

Levitra's metabolism is inhibited by certain medications, including:

• Erythromycin
• Ketoconazole (Nizoral)
• Itraconazole (Sporanox)
• Indinavir (Crixivan)
• Ritonavir (Norvir)

Levitra can also reduce the concentration of ritonavir and indinavir. In patients taking nitrates, Levitra may worsen chest pain by increasing heart rate and lowering blood pressure. Additionally, Levitra can amplify the blood pressure-lowering effects of alpha-blocking drugs such as terazosin (Hytrin). It should never be administered to patients treated with organic nitrates.

Missed Dose

Levitra is taken as needed and not more than once daily. Therefore, a missed dose is not applicable.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include:

• Pain in the back, jaw, or arm
• Blindness or blurred vision
• Chest pain or discomfort
• Decreased vision

Storage

Store Levitra at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F). Keep it away from children, pets, moisture, and sunlight.
