Midodrine is prescribed for patients with symptomatic orthostatic hypotension who experience dizziness or fainting upon standing. It raises blood pressure by stimulating alpha‑1 adrenergic receptors in blood vessels and improves the ability to stand and perform daily activities.
The usual starting dose for adults is 2.5–10 mg three times daily during daytime hours. Doses are typically taken at intervals of 3–4 hours and not close to bedtime to avoid high blood pressure while lying down. Follow your doctor's instructions carefully and do not exceed the prescribed dose.
Before taking Midodrine, inform your healthcare provider if you have heart disease, kidney problems, urinary retention, or thyroid disorders. Monitor blood pressure regularly during treatment and avoid taking the medication late in the evening.
Midodrine should not be used in patients with severe heart disease, acute kidney disease, urinary retention, or uncontrolled hypertension. It is also contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug.
Common side effects include tingling of the scalp, chills, goosebumps, itching, or urinary urgency. In some cases, high blood pressure when lying down may occur. Seek medical advice if severe symptoms develop.
Midodrine may interact with other medications that increase blood pressure or affect heart rate. Combining it with certain antidepressants or decongestants may increase the risk of hypertension. Inform your healthcare provider about all medications and supplements you take.
If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember during the day. Skip the missed dose if it is close to bedtime or the next scheduled dose. Do not double the dose.
Overdose may cause severe hypertension, slow heart rate, or urinary retention. Seek immediate medical attention if overdose is suspected. Treatment is usually supportive and symptom‑based.
Store Midodrine at room temperature, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children. Do not use after the expiration date.
