Biaxin is a macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. This action is primarily bacteriostatic but can also be bactericidal. Macrolides accumulate within leukocytes and are transported to the infection site. Biaxin is effective against various bacteria, including Haemophilus influenzae, Streptococcus pneumoniae, Mycoplasma pneumoniae, Staphylococcus aureus, and Mycobacterium avium. It is commonly used to treat bacterial infections of the skin, respiratory system, and stomach ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori.
Take Biaxin tablets with or without food, accompanied by a full glass of water. Swallow the pill whole. Do not exceed the recommended dosage. Continue taking the medication even if symptoms improve. The usual treatment duration ranges from 7 to 14 days, or longer for stomach ulcers.
Avoid Biaxin if you are allergic to erythromycin or other macrolide antibiotics. Consult your doctor before use if you have liver or kidney disease, mineral imbalances (low potassium or magnesium), certain heart conditions, or arrhythmias. This medication is not recommended during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
Biaxin is contraindicated in patients with a known hypersensitivity to clarithromycin, erythromycin, or any macrolide antibiotics.
Seek medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, or swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other serious side effects include uneven heartbeats, chest pain, nausea, stomach pain, low fever, or hearing problems.
Biaxin may interact with cisapride, pimozide, and ergot medications, potentially causing life-threatening heart rhythm disorders.
Do not take a double dose. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal discomfort. Contact your doctor immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Store Biaxin at room temperature (59-77°F or 15-25°C) away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
