Betapace contains sotalol hydrochloride, an antiarrhythmic drug with properties of classes II (beta-adrenoreceptor blocking) and III (cardiac action potential duration prolongation). Betapace is used to treat various forms of supraventricular arrhythmias. It is particularly effective in treating atrial fibrillation and atrial flutter. It is also used for supraventricular tachycardia, including Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, paroxysmal atrial flutter, and ventricular tachycardia.
The recommended starting dose is 0.04-0.08 g, taken 2-3 times daily. If needed, the dose may be increased to up to 0.16 g, taken 2-3 times daily. Take the medication orally with a full glass of water before a meal. Do not chew the medication.
Caution is necessary when prescribing sotalol to patients with a recent myocardial infarction.
