Bactrim contains two active ingredients: sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Sulfamethoxazole inhibits the synthesis of dihydrofolic acid, a substance essential for human and bacterial metabolism. Trimethoprim blocks the next stage of the biochemical cycle, preventing the formation of tetrahydrofolic acid, a process unique to microorganisms. This combination makes Bactrim effective against infections caused by streptococci, staphylococci, pneumococci, bacillus dysentery, typhoid fever, E. coli, and Proteus. However, it is ineffective against Mycobacterium tuberculosis, spirochetes, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Bactrim is commonly used to treat pneumonia and infections of the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urogenital systems, including post-surgical bacterial infections.
Bactrim can be taken two to three times daily, with or without food. The dosage varies depending on the type and severity of the infection. Always take the medication with a full glass of water. Patients with severe kidney impairment may require adjusted dosages.
Do not use Bactrim if you are allergic to its components, pregnant, breastfeeding, or have anemia caused by folic acid deficiency. This medication is also contraindicated in premature babies and newborns.
Seek immediate medical attention if you experience signs of an allergic reaction, such as hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other serious side effects include fever, sore throat, headache with severe blistering, pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, watery or bloody diarrhea, hallucinations, slow heart rate, weak pulse, nausea, stomach pain, or reduced urination.
Bactrim should not be co-administered with dofetilide or methenamine. It may alter the effects of anti-diabetic medications, blood thinners, cyclosporine, digoxin, potassium-increasing drugs, live vaccines, tricyclic antidepressants, and certain diuretics. Inform your doctor about all prescription and nonprescription or herbal products you are using.
If you miss a dose, do not double the next dose. Skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule.
Symptoms of overdose may include dizziness, drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, stomach pain, headache, yellowing of the skin or eyes, blood in the urine, or fainting. Seek immediate medical help if you suspect an overdose.
Store Bactrim at room temperature, between 59-77°F (15-25°C), away from light, moisture, children, and pets.
