Common Use

Baclofen is primarily used to treat muscle spasms, clonus, cramping, rigidity, and pain associated with conditions like multiple sclerosis and spinal cord injuries. It works by relaxing skeletal muscles, which are responsible for body movement and are also known as striated muscles.

Dosage and Direction

Take Baclofen exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Do not exceed the recommended dosage or use it for longer than directed. The medication should be taken orally with water. For adults, the usual starting dose is 5 mg three times daily. The dose may be increased by 15 mg every three days, up to a maximum of 80 mg per day in divided doses.

Precautions

Inform your doctor of your medical history, especially if you have kidney disease, diabetes, seizures, stroke, or allergies to Baclofen, other medications, foods, dyes, or preservatives. Notify your doctor if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding. Abruptly stopping Baclofen can cause severe reactions, so your doctor will gradually reduce the dose to minimize side effects. You may experience drowsiness or dizziness initially or after dose changes. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how the medication affects you.

Contraindications

Baclofen is contraindicated for individuals with an allergy to the drug. Inform your doctor if you have kidney disease, epilepsy, a seizure disorder, or a history of stroke or blood clots. In such cases, your doctor may advise against using Baclofen.

Possible Side Effects

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience allergic reactions, chest pain, respiratory depression, seizures, or other severe side effects. Common side effects that may not require immediate medical attention include confusion, but inform your doctor if they persist or worsen.

Drug Interactions

Baclofen may interact with alcohol, antihistamines, medications for depression, anxiety, pain, sleep, and other mental conditions. Combining Baclofen with tricyclic antidepressants can cause muscle weakness, while combining it with monoamine oxidase inhibitors may lead to increased brain function depression and low blood pressure.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as possible. If it is nearly time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take double or extra doses.

Overdose

In case of an overdose, contact a poison control center or emergency room immediately.

Storage

Store Baclofen at room temperature, between 15 and 30 degrees Celsius (59 and 86 degrees Fahrenheit). Keep the container tightly closed and out of reach of children.
