Common Use
Azuflidine is a salicylate medication primarily used to treat ulcerative colitis by reducing inflammation. It can also help increase the time between ulcerative colitis flare-ups.
Dosage and Directions
Take Azuflidine exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It should be taken with food and a full glass of water. It is recommended to drink extra fluids while using this medication. Space your doses at least 8 hours apart. Continue taking the medicine even if you feel well, and do not miss any doses.
Precautions
Before starting Azuflidine, consult your doctor if:
- You are pregnant or breastfeeding.
- You are taking any prescription or non-prescription medications, herbal products, or dietary supplements.
- You have allergies to food, medications, or other substances.
- You have liver or kidney problems, asthma, severe allergies, blood disorders (such as anemia or low white blood cell levels), or rheumatoid arthritis.
- You have glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency or an active infection.
Contraindications
Do not use Azulfidine if:

- Severe or persistent stomach pain
- Shortness of breath
- Trouble walking
- Unusual bruising or bleeding
- Unusual tiredness or weakness
- Unusually pale skin
- Yellowing of the eyes or skin, along with dark urine, pale stools, or persistent loss of appetite
Drug Interactions
Inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, especially:
- Anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin) or methotrexate, as Azulfidine may increase their side effects.
- Beta-blockers (e.g., propranolol), digoxin, or folic acid, as Azulfidine may decrease their effectiveness.
- Methenamine, as it may increase the risk of crystals in the urine.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose of Azulfidine, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Do not take two doses at once.
Overdose
Symptoms of overdose may include seizures, severe stomach pain, nausea, vomiting, or unusual drowsiness. Contact your doctor immediately if you suspect an overdose.
Storage
Store Azulfidine at a temperature between 59-86°F (15-30°C). Keep it away from heat, moisture, light, and children.
