Aygestin is a synthetic form of the female hormone progesterone, with norethindrone acetate as its primary component. It may contain norethindrone alone or be combined with oral estrogen, offering a safer option with fewer side effects. This medication is prescribed to restore menstruation in women experiencing amenorrhea (absence of menstrual cycles for several months), treat endometriosis (a condition where abnormal uterine tissue grows outside the uterus, causing painful or irregular periods), and manage abnormal bleeding. Aygestin works by halting the normal growth of the uterine lining during the menstrual cycle and inducing hormonal changes to restore regular menstrual periods.
Aygestin is typically taken in doses ranging from 2.5 to 10 milligrams daily for 5-10 days during the second half of a 28-day menstrual cycle. Menstruation usually begins 3 to 7 days after stopping the medication. For endometriosis, the starting dose is 5 milligrams daily for 2 weeks, which may be increased by 2.5 milligrams every 2 weeks, up to a maximum of 15 milligrams daily. Always follow your doctor's instructions and avoid exceeding the prescribed dose.
Aygestin is not intended for pregnancy testing, miscarriage prevention, or managing bleeding caused by fibroids or cancer. It may increase the risk of blood clots, leading to phlebitis, breathing difficulties, vision problems, or strokes. Inform your doctor before undergoing any surgery, including dental procedures. Avoid smoking while using this medication. Do not use Aygestin if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Notify your doctor if you have a history of conditions such as high blood pressure, seizures, migraines, diabetes, asthma, heart, liver, or kidney problems, strokes, blood clots, breast or genital cancer, high cholesterol, depression, excessive weight gain, swelling during menstruation, or jaundice.
Aygestin is contraindicated in pregnant women, patients with thromboembolic disorders, thrombophlebitis, cerebral apoplexy (stroke history), known or suspected breast cancer, severe liver dysfunction or disease, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, and missed abortion.
Like any medication, Aygestin may cause side effects depending on individual reactions. These can include allergic reactions (acne, blood clots in arteries, veins, eyes, or lungs), nausea, vomiting, headache, dizziness, depression, sleeplessness, irritability, breakthrough menstrual bleeding, breast enlargement or tenderness, cervical changes or secretions, and alterations in menstrual flow.
Inform your doctor and lab technicians about all medications and herbal products you are taking while using Aygestin to avoid potential interactions.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember unless it is almost time for your next dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not double up to make up for a missed dose.
If you suspect an overdose, seek immediate medical attention.
Store Aygestin in a dry place away from sunlight at room temperature, between 15-30°C (59-86°F).
