This is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that effectively destroys bacteria. It targets both aerobic (developing in the presence of oxygen) and anaerobic (developing in the absence of oxygen) gram-positive bacteria, as well as aerobic gram-negative microorganisms, including strains that produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that breaks down penicillin. The inclusion of clavulanate potassium in this medication enhances Augmentin's resistance to bacterial beta-lactamases. It is commonly used to treat pneumonia, respiratory infections, gastrointestinal and urogenital infections, post-surgical infections, and other bacterial diseases.
The dosage is determined individually based on your condition, the infection's location, and the pathogen's susceptibility. Do not exceed the recommended dose or duration of use. Swallow the tablet whole. If using Augmentin Chewable tablets, chew them before swallowing. Ensure the medication is taken at evenly spaced intervals.
Exercise caution in patients with liver failure. This medication is not recommended for pregnant women (especially in the third trimester) or breastfeeding women.
Using Augmentin with other antibiotics may alter the normal bacteria in the colon, potentially leading to an overgrowth of C. difficile, which can cause pseudomembranous colitis. Probenecid, used to treat gout, may slow the excretion of Augmentin by the kidneys, increasing its toxicity.
If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember, unless it is almost time for your next scheduled dose. In that case, skip the missed dose. Do not take an extra dose to compensate.
If you suspect an overdose and experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea, skin rash, drowsiness, or hyperactivity, seek immediate medical attention.
Store at room temperature, between 59-86°F (15-30°C), away from light and moisture.
