Common Use

Ampicillin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic belonging to the aminopenicillin group. It works by inhibiting the construction of cell walls in bacteria sensitive to its effects. It remains stable in the acidic environment of the stomach and is easily absorbed. Ampicillin is effective against gram-positive microorganisms and certain gram-negative ones, including Salmonella, Shigella, Proteus, E. coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, and Haemophilus influenzae. It is used to treat infections caused by mixed bacteria. However, it is not effective against microorganisms that produce penicillase. This medication is commonly prescribed for pneumonia and other infections of the respiratory, urogenital, and gastrointestinal systems.

Dosage and Directions

Take Ampicillin exactly as prescribed. Capsules should be consumed with a full glass of water, either 30 minutes before or 2 hours after a meal.

Precautions

• If you have a known allergy to penicillin or cephalosporin antibiotics, consult your doctor before taking this medication.
• Diarrhea may occur as a side effect; inform your doctor if it persists before taking any anti-diarrheal medication.
• Ampicillin may cause false-positive results in certain urine glucose tests.
• Prolonged use of Ampicillin may lead to superinfection. Contact your doctor if symptoms do not improve or worsen.

Contraindications

Do not use Ampicillin if you are hypersensitive to it. Exercise caution if you have liver failure, asthma, or hay fever.

Drug Interactions

Missed Dose

Do not double the dose. For twice-daily dosing, take the missed dose as soon as remembered and the next dose 5-6 hours later. For thrice-daily dosing, take the missed dose immediately and the next dose in 2-4 hours.

Overdose

If you suspect an overdose and experience allergy symptoms like hives or rash, seek medical help immediately.

Storage

Store Ampicillin at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15-30 degrees C), away from light and moisture.
